Athletes

Many critics of professional athletes have, over the years, complained that professional athletes are generally spoiled, that they make too much money, and that they do not really try their hardest. This is the case for some athletes, but the majority are doing all they can to make themselves better players and their teams winners. If it seems as though many professional athletes are flashier than most, it is usually because many come from poor backgrounds and have used their athletic talent and hardworking attitudes to pull themselves out of poverty and into a lifestyle of which they had always dreamed.

The Long Road

The athletes that grace the covers of major sports magazines have undoubtedly been fortunate enough to be blessed with exceptional athletic talent. However, many of these athletes can be considered self-made millionaires because talent alone is not enough to push an individual to success. Talent must be developed and hard work in the gym and practice are what the top athletes in the country have relied upon to make their millions.

A Fair Trade

Many sports writers and media critics knock professional athletes for being overpaid and highlighting their occasional childish behavior. While this is warranted with some players, the majority of athletes that have turned pro have more than paid their dues. Look at it from their perspective. They are in a bubble. They have constant media attention and scrutiny about almost everything they do both on and off the field of play. They are followed by reporters, cannot go out in public without being hounded for autographs, and their personal lives are exposed for the world to see.

In every competition, the performance and mettle of a professional athlete is scrutinized by the media and their worst mistakes are broadcast to the entire nation. It is a safe bet that the average American does not have to put up with all of these factors at their job and if they did most would probably quit. In fact, for most Americans it would take millions of dollars for them to put up with this kind of treatment in order to consider it a fair trade.

The Last Word

Many pro athletes put their blood, sweat, and tears into their jobs. Some deserve criticism, but most deserve every penny that they get. Pro athletes who have come from poverty and made themselves millionaires are about as close to the American dream as can be seen in today’s world. While most Americans have the luxury of a nine-to-five job, most professional athletes live their jobs every minute of every day. The top executives and doctors in the country put in years of education and training to get where they are to become millionaires. If there were blow-by-blow media coverage of every boardroom meeting at the biggest companies you can bet that Executives’ salaries would skyrocket.
